How to Report a Post, Profile, Page or Message on Facebook (and When You Can’t)

Meta says the best way to report abusive content or spam is the Report link near the content itself. In Meta’s steps it’s usually inside an Options menu, and where that menu sits changes depending on what you’re reporting. Here are Meta’s steps for each type on a computer, and what to do when reporting doesn’t work.

Quick answer

Click ⋯ Options next to the thing you want to report, then Report post, Report profile, Report page, Report comment (behind more), Report ad and so on, and pick the reason that best matches. For messages, open the chat and use Options or ⓘ Information > Report. If reporting doesn’t work, Meta says to log in on a computer and use the report links there. Can’t see the content (for example, you’re blocked)? Meta has separate help for that, and for a Page you can’t access it suggests asking a friend to report it. You can’t report a comment on your own profile, but you can hide or delete it, or block the person.

Does this match what you see?

  • You can’t find the Report option on a post, profile or Page.
  • You want to report a fake account, scam or abusive message.
  • You can’t see the content because you’ve been blocked.
  • There’s no way to report a comment on your own profile.
  • You clicked Report but weren’t asked to submit anything.

Computer (browser)

Steps come from Meta’s help page for reporting content on a computer. Meta says that if you’re having trouble reporting something, log in from a computer and use the report links. To report a fake account pretending to be you, see fake account impersonation.

Why this happens: the possible causes

Start with the line that matches what you see.

  • The Report option is in a menuPossible

Meta’s steps put Report behind an Options menu for posts, profiles, Pages, groups, events and ads, and behind “more” for comments.

Meta has separate help for people who don’t have an account or can’t see the content, for example because someone blocked them.

Try these 60-second checks first

  • Look for ⋯ Options next to the content.
  • Having trouble? Try on a computer.
  • Pick the reason that best matches what you see.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Report a post, photo or video

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

Meta’s steps for posts, photos and videos on a computer.

Computer (browser)

  1. Post: go to the post, click ⋯ Options in its top right, then Report post. Choose the reason that best describes how it goes against the Community Standards, then click Submit on the summary screen and Done.
  2. Photo or video: click it to expand it, click ⋯ Options to the right, then Report photo or Report video, and follow the instructions. If the profile is locked and you can’t see the full-size photo, click Find support or report photo.
  3. A post on your own profile: go to your profile, click ⋯ Options on the post, then Report post. You can also block the person who posted it.

Meta says you can also Unfollow, Block or Unfriend to stop seeing similar things.

Did it work? You’ve finished the on-screen report steps.

Fix 2: Report a profile

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

Meta’s steps for reporting a profile that goes against its Community Standards.

Computer (browser)

  1. Log into Facebook and go to the profile (click its name in your Feed or search for it).
  2. Click ⋯ Options to the right, then Report profile.
  3. Click the option that best describes the problem, then Done.

Someone bothering you? Meta says you can also unfriend or block them. If the profile is pretending to be you or someone you know, follow fake account impersonation.

Did it work? You see the Done screen.

Fix 3: Report a comment (and what to do on your own profile)

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

For comments, Meta’s steps start from more next to the comment.

Computer (browser)

  1. Go to the comment and click more next to it.
  2. Click Report comment.
  3. Choose the option that best describes the problem. Nothing fits? Click Something Else to search for more.

Meta says you can’t currently report a comment on your own profile. You can hide or delete it, and you can block someone from seeing your profile if they post offensive comments. To limit who can comment in future, see comments not showing.

Did it work? The comment is reported, or hidden or deleted on your profile.

Fix 4: Report a message

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

Meta’s steps for reporting a message on facebook.com.

Computer (browser)

  1. Click Messenger in the top right of any Facebook page and open the conversation.
  2. In a pop-up chat, click Options. In full Message view, click ⓘ Information.
  3. Click Report. In Message view, if you don’t see it, click Privacy & support to open the dropdown, then Report.
  4. Choose the option that best describes the problem.

Meta has separate steps for secret conversations, and for reporting in the Messenger app (see the Messenger Help Center).

Did it work? You’ve finished the on-screen report steps.

Fix 5: Report a Page, group or event

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

For Pages and groups, Meta’s steps use Options below the cover photo.

Computer (browser)

  1. Page: go to the Page, click ⋯ Options below its cover photo, select Report page, and choose the best option.
  2. Group you’re a member of: go to the group, click Options below its cover photo, and select Report Group.
  3. Event: from your Feed, click Events in the left menu, go to the event, click ⋯ Options and select Report event.

Can’t access the Page? Meta suggests asking a friend to report it.

Did it work? You’ve finished the on-screen report steps.

Fix 6: Report an ad or a hashtag

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

Meta says reporting content that may go against its Advertising Policies signals that the ad may need another review.

Computer (browser)

  1. Ad: in your Feed, click Options next to the ad, then Report ad, and follow the instructions.
  2. Ad gone from your Feed? Click Recent ad activity in the left menu to find ads you saved or interacted with, or search Meta’s Ad Library.
  3. Hashtag: search for it, click ⋯ Options, select Give feedback or report topic, choose the reason, then Submit.

Spotted a scam ad selling goods? See Marketplace scams for warning signs.

Did it work? You’ve finished the on-screen report steps.

Fix 7: Can’t report it? Use a computer, or ask a friend

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta’s advice when reporting doesn’t work.

  1. If you’re having trouble reporting something, Meta says to log in from a computer and use the report links.
  2. If you can’t see the content (for example, someone blocked you (external site, opens in a new tab)) or don’t have an account, Meta says to ask a friend with an account to report it, using the Report link near the post, photo or comment. Meta says it can’t act until it can find the content, so include as much detail as possible, such as links and screenshots.
  3. Can’t access a Page you want to report? Meta suggests asking a friend to report it.
  4. Report it from your own profile if it was posted there (Fix 1).

Your account was hacked, or you can’t log in? Reporting content won’t fix that: see Facebook hacked account recovery or can’t log in.

Did it work? You’ve submitted a report, or a friend has.

Block a profile, Page or group nickname

Reporting tells Meta about content; blocking stops someone interacting with you. Meta says a blocked profile or Page can’t see your posts, tag you, invite you to events or groups, start a conversation with you or add you as a friend. If you’re connected, blocking also unfriends, unlikes and unfollows them. They aren’t notified.

  • Block a profile or Page: go to their profile or Page, then on a computer click Options (or More) > Block > Confirm; on a phone or tablet (app or mobile browser) tap the three dots (•••) (or More) > Block > Block. Meta says the Block option is no longer in the post menu in Feed.
  • From settings: Settings & privacy > Settings > Blocking (under Audience and visibility; on a phone, tap Menu first: top left on iPhone and Android, bottom right on iPad, top right in a mobile browser or Facebook Lite; in Lite, tap Close after blocking) > Add to blocked list, type their name, then Block and confirm. Can’t find them? Meta suggests trying an email address linked to their profile.
  • Block a nickname in a group: click the nickname or its photo on a post or comment, click Options next to the nickname on its group profile page, then Block [Nickname] > Block. Meta says this blocks only that nickname, not the main profile or their other nicknames.

Meta says blocking doesn’t cover apps, games or groups you both use, and may not prevent all contact. Blocking one of someone’s profiles doesn’t block their other profiles. If you have additional profiles, block from each one separately; blocking from several may let the person work out they’re all yours. More on blocking from Marketplace: block someone on Marketplace.

Unblock someone

  • Computer: profile picture > Settings & privacy > Settings > Blocking (below Audience and visibility) > Edit > See your blocked list, then Unblock next to the profile or Page > Confirm.
  • Phone or tablet: Menu (top left on iPhone and Android, bottom right on iPad, top right in a mobile browser or Lite) > Settings & privacy > Settings > Blocking, then Unblock next to them and tap Unblock again to confirm.
  • Group nicknames are unblocked from the same Blocking settings: tap Unblock next to the nickname, then confirm.

Meta says an unblocked profile or Page can see your public posts again, but you won’t automatically be friends or follow them: send a new friend request, or like or follow the Page again. If you unblock a profile or Page, you can’t block it again for a few days (this wait doesn’t apply to nicknames).

What happens after you report

Meta says that depending on your feedback, you may then be able to submit a report. For some types of content, it doesn’t ask you to submit a report but uses your feedback to help its systems learn. Meta says it removes things if they go against its Community Standards.

If you just want to stop seeing someone, Meta says you can unfollow, unfriend or block them.

How to know it worked

  • You reached the Done or confirmation screen.
  • You’ve blocked, unfollowed or unfriended the person if you don’t want to see them again.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Someone is pretending to be you? See fake account impersonation.
  2. Want to stop someone contacting you? Block them, and see Facebook recovery scams if they’re asking for codes or money.
  3. Your own post was removed after a report? See Facebook removed your post.
