Can’t Send or Accept a Friend Request on Facebook? Every Reason and Fix

When you can’t add someone on Facebook, the reason is usually a setting or a limit, on your account or theirs. Meta lists six of them, from a request that’s still pending to the 6,000-friend limit. Here they are in the order to check them, with what you can do about each one.

Quick answer

First check your sent requests: you may already have a request waiting. If not, one of you may have hit Facebook’s limit of 6,000 friends: Meta says you can turn on professional mode to connect with more people, unfriend someone, or follow them instead. One of you may also allow requests only from friends of friends: ask them to send you the request. If you’ve blocked them, unblock them first. If Facebook has blocked you from sending friend requests, see Meta’s page on that block and our Facebook jail guide.

Does this match what you see?

  • There’s no Add Friend button on someone’s profile, or only Follow or Message.
  • You send a request but nothing happens, or it disappears.
  • You can’t accept a friend request someone sent you.
  • Facebook says you’ve reached a limit, or you’re blocked from sending requests.

Meta gives the same reasons for every version of Facebook: the apps, Lite and browsers.

Why this happens: the possible causes

Meta lists these reasons. Some are on your side, some on theirs.

  • The 6,000-friend limitPossible

Meta says you can have up to 6,000 friends, and you won’t be able to accept a friend request from someone who has 6,000 friends.

  • A friends-of-friends privacy settingCheck this first

Meta says either of you may have set your privacy settings to get friend requests only from friends of friends.

  • A blockPossible

You can’t send a request to someone you’ve blocked. Facebook can also block you from sending friend requests.

How to fix it, step by step

Work through these in order. They start with the quickest, safest checks and only move to steps that sign you out or remove data later.

Fix 1: Check whether a request is already pending

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta’s first reason is the simplest: they haven’t accepted your request yet, or you’re already friends.

  1. Open your sent requests: facebook.com/friends/requests?outgoing=1 on a computer or phone browser, as Meta links it. In the app, look in Friends for your sent requests.
  2. If your request is there, it’s still waiting for them. Give them time, or let them know another way.
  3. If they’re already in your friends list, there’s nothing to add.

Did it work? You know whether a request is pending or you’re already friends.

Fix 2: Hit the 6,000-friend limit? Your options

Safe & reversible5 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says you can have up to 6,000 friends. It also works the other way: you can’t accept a request from someone who already has 6,000 friends.

  1. Turn on professional mode (pro mode). Meta says this lets you connect with more than 6,000 friends. See how to turn on professional mode on each device.
  2. Unfriend someone you no longer keep in touch with, then send the new request. On a computer, Meta says to search for their profile, click Friends at the top of it, then Unfriend > Confirm. They aren’t notified, and you’re removed from their friends list too.
  3. Follow them instead, if they’ve turned following on. Meta says you’ll still see their public posts. See follow someone (external site, opens in a new tab).
  4. If they have 6,000 friends, they’d need to unfriend someone or turn on professional mode. You can follow them if they’ve turned following on.

Did it work? The request goes through, or you’re following them instead.

Fix 3: No Add Friend button? Check the friends-of-friends setting

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

If someone only accepts requests from friends of friends, and you have no friends in common, you can’t send them one.

  1. Ask the person to send you the request instead. Meta suggests this.
  2. If your setting is the problem (people can’t add you): on a computer, or in the app after tapping Menu (top left on iPhone and Android, bottom right on iPad, top right in Lite and a mobile browser), go to Settings & privacy > Settings > How people find and contact you (under Audience and visibility) > Who can send you friend requests? (iPhone: Who can send me friend requests?), and choose Everyone or Friends of Friends. Meta’s Privacy Checkup also lets you review this.
  3. Hard to find? Meta suggests using the first and last name you use in everyday life, adding another name (external site, opens in a new tab) people know you by (such as a nickname or maiden name), and adding your basic info (external site, opens in a new tab).
  4. If you only see Follow or Message, the person may also have following turned on, so you can follow them in the meantime.

Did it work? The request is sent from one side or the other.

Fix 4: Request disappeared? It may have been deleted

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta lists a deleted request as a reason you can’t add someone. Meta also says you can have up to 1,000 sent requests waiting for a response, and that if you send more, the oldest request is deleted.

  1. Send them a new friend request: tap Search (top right in the apps; the search bar at the top left on a computer), enter their name, tap Search, then Add friend next to their name (on iPhone and iPad, tap People at the top first; you can Filter by city, education, work or friends of friends). Or ask them to send you one.
  2. Sent a lot of requests? Check your sent requests (Fix 1) and cancel old ones you no longer need (our advice), so you stay under Meta’s 1,000 limit. To cancel on a computer, Meta says to open View Sent Requests (or find the person), click View sent request, then Cancel Request.
  3. If they deleted your request: Meta says the person who sent a deleted request can’t send another one for one year, and isn’t notified that it was deleted. Our advice: ask them to send you a request instead. If they deleted it on purpose, respect that.

Did it work? A new request is pending, or they’ve sent you one.

Fix 5: You blocked them? Unblock first

May sign you out2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

You can’t send a friend request to someone you’ve blocked.

  1. Unblock them: Settings & privacy > Settings > Blocking > Unblock. Full steps for every device: unblock someone. Meta says you’ll then need to send a new friend request.
  2. Then send them a friend request.

Did it work? The Add Friend button appears on their profile.

Fix 6: Blocked from sending friend requests

Safe & reversibleVariesiPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says this usually happens because you recently sent a lot of friend requests, your past requests went unanswered, or they were marked as unwelcome. It’s a limit on your account, not a setting on theirs.

  1. Wait it out. Meta says the block is temporary and ends automatically within a few days, and that it can’t lift it early.
  2. Stop sending requests for now (our advice). Repeating them won’t speed it up.
  3. To avoid it next time, Meta suggests: only send requests to people you already know (family, friends, coworkers, classmates); follow people you don’t know, such as celebrities, instead of adding them; and use the name you go by in everyday life, so people recognize your requests.
  4. Longer or wider restrictions? See Facebook jail: restricted account.

Did it work? You can send friend requests again without a warning.

A note on who to add

Meta says you can add people you know personally as friends. In our experience, sending lots of requests quickly, especially to people you don’t know, is the kind of activity that can lead to a block. To keep up with public figures or people you don’t know, follow them instead.

Error messages and what they mean

Meta’s page doesn’t quote the on-screen messages, so we describe them. Match the meaning to what you see.

How to know it worked

  • Your request is pending, or you’re now friends.
  • Or you’re following them, if adding isn’t possible.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. If you can’t post, comment or message either, see Facebook jail: restricted account.
  2. If the app itself misbehaves, see Facebook not working.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Facebook friend request block last?

Meta says it’s temporary and ends automatically within a few days, and that it can’t lift the block early. It usually happens after sending a lot of requests, or when past requests went unanswered or were marked as unwelcome.

Is there a limit on friend requests on Facebook?

Meta says you can have up to 1,000 sent requests waiting for a response. If you send more, the oldest request is deleted. Separately, you can have up to 6,000 friends.

Why can’t I add someone as a friend on Facebook?

Meta lists six reasons: a request is already pending or you’re already friends; one of you has 6,000 friends; one of you only accepts requests from friends of friends; the request was deleted; you’ve blocked them; or you’ve been blocked from sending friend requests.

What is the Facebook friend limit?

Meta says you can have up to 6,000 friends. Turning on professional mode lets you connect with more than 6,000.

Why can’t I accept a friend request?

Meta says you won’t be able to accept a friend request from someone who has 6,000 friends. You also can’t add more friends if you’ve reached 6,000 yourself.

How do I accept a friend request on Facebook?

On a computer, Meta says to go to facebook.com/find-friends and click Confirm next to the request. In the iPhone or Android app, tap Menu (top left) > Friends, then tap Confirm. On iPad, tap Friends, then Confirm next to the request. In Facebook Lite or a mobile browser, Meta says to tap the icon at the top of the screen, then Confirm (in a mobile browser, See All shows all your requests).

What happens when I delete a friend request?

Meta says the person who sent it isn’t notified and can’t send you another request for one year. On a computer, go to facebook.com/find-friends and click Delete or Delete Request; in the iPhone or Android app, tap Menu (top left) > Friends > Delete; on iPad, tap Menu (bottom right) > Friends, then Delete below Friend Requests; in Facebook Lite or a mobile browser, tap the icon at the top of the screen, then Delete (in a mobile browser, See all shows all your requests). If you block someone, they can’t send more friend requests.

How do I cancel a friend request I sent?

On a computer, Meta says to go to View Sent Requests (or search for the person), click View sent request, then Cancel Request. In the app: Menu (top left on iPhone and Android, bottom right on iPad) > Friends > See all next to Friend requests > Options (top right) > View sent requests, then Cancel below their name. In Facebook Lite, tap Search at the top of your Feed, open the person’s profile, then tap Cancel. You can’t cancel a request that’s already been accepted; you’d need to unfriend them instead.

How do I unfriend someone on Facebook, and will they know?

On a computer, Meta says to go to their profile, click Friends, then Unfriend and Confirm. If you can’t find their profile, it may be deactivated: go to your own profile > Friends, search their name, then Options > Unfriend. In the Android app, tap Search, open their profile, tap Friends > Unfriend > Confirm; for a deactivated profile, go to your profile > See All Friends > Options next to them > Unfriend. On iPhone and iPad you confirm with OK, and in a mobile browser or Facebook Lite with Yes; on iPhone, deactivated profiles are under Menu > Friends > Your friends. Meta says they won’t be notified, and you’ll also be removed from their friends list.

How do I see friend requests I’ve sent?

Meta links your sent requests at facebook.com/friends/requests?outgoing=1.

Why is there only a Follow button?

Meta doesn’t say exactly, but likely reasons are a friends-of-friends setting or the friend limit. If they have following turned on, you can follow them to see their public posts.
