How to Sell on Facebook Marketplace: Create a Listing and Fix “Next” Grayed Out

Selling on Facebook Marketplace takes a few minutes: open Marketplace, tap Sell (or Create new listing on a computer), add photos and details, and publish. Here are Meta’s steps for each device, what to do when the Next button is grayed out or Marketplace is missing, and Meta’s own tips for a smooth sale.

Quick answer

App: tap Menu > Marketplace (under See more if you don’t see it) > Sell > Create listing, choose the listing type, add photos and details, then tap Publish (Facebook Lite: Menu > Marketplace > Sell). Computer: Marketplace in the left menu > Create new listing > Item for sale, add photos and info, click Next, then Publish. To give something away, enter 0 as the price. If Next is grayed out, Meta says to make sure you’ve entered the required info.

Does this match what you see?

  • You want to sell something on Facebook and don’t know where to start.
  • The Next button is grayed out when you create a listing.
  • You want to list an item for free.
  • You can’t find Marketplace or the Sell button.

Steps come from Meta’s help page for the computer, iPhone, iPad, Android and Facebook Lite. Meta’s page doesn’t give separate mobile browser steps. Meta’s Commerce Policies say Marketplace is meant for consumer-to-consumer sales, and that businesses selling in the EEA, the Philippines and India may have their access or listings restricted.

  • Check the item is allowed: see things you can’t sell on Marketplace.
  • Have clear, original photos of the item ready.
  • Fill in every required field before tapping Next.
  • Update the Facebook app if Marketplace looks different from these steps (our advice).

How to fix it, step by step

Fix 2: “Next” grayed out? Fill in the required info

Safe & reversible2 minComputer (browser)

On a computer, Meta says that if Next is grayed out, you should make sure you’ve entered the information that’s required.

  1. Go back through the listing form and fill in any empty fields. Meta doesn’t list which fields are required. Our advice: check the title, price, category and photos first.
  2. Our advice: for a free item, enter 0 as the price rather than leaving it blank (Meta says 0 marks an item as Free: Fix 3).
  3. Our advice: if every field is filled and Next is still gray, refresh the page or try another browser.

Did it work? Next (or Publish) can be tapped.

Fix 3: Give something away: list it for free

Safe & reversible1 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says that to mark an item as Free, you can enter 0 as the price.

  1. Create your listing as normal (Fix 1).
  2. Enter 0 in the price field.
  3. Publish the listing.

Did it work? Your listing shows as free.

Fix 4: List it in buy and sell groups or on your profile too

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroid

In the app, Meta says More listing options lets you add details and choose more places to list your item.

  1. While creating the listing, tap More listing options.
  2. If you like, select more places to list your item, such as buy and sell groups or your Facebook profile. On Android, tap Done.
  3. Choose a category for your listing.
  4. Tap Publish.

Posted in a group but the item isn’t on Marketplace? See listing not showing.

Did it work? Your listing appears in the places you selected.

Fix 5: Can’t find Marketplace or the Sell button?

Safe & reversible3 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta says that if you don’t see Marketplace in the app menu, you should tap See more.

  1. In the app, tap Menu, then See more, and look for Marketplace.
  2. In Marketplace, look for Sell at the top (computer: Create new listing).
  3. Still missing, or you see “Marketplace isn’t available to you”? Follow Facebook Marketplace not showing.

Did it work? You can open Sell or Create new listing.

Fix 6: After publishing: edit, mark as sold, or fix a listing that won’t show

Safe & reversible2 miniPhone & iPadAndroidComputer (browser)

Meta has separate help for editing a listing and marking an item as sold.

  1. Need to change something? See Meta’s help to edit your listing (external site, opens in a new tab).
  2. Sold it, or agreed a sale? Mark it as sold or pending.
  3. Pending, rejected or invisible to buyers? See Facebook Marketplace listing not showing.
  4. Buyer messages missing? See Marketplace messages not showing.

Did it work? Your listing is up to date.

Hide from friends: who can still see your listing

Meta says a listing with Hide from friends turned on is still public. It’s hidden from your Facebook and Messenger friends in most cases, but anyone off Facebook and Messenger can still see it. It must still follow the Commerce Policies.

Meta says a hidden listing can still be seen by:

  • People who aren’t logged in to Facebook or Messenger, including your friends while they’re logged out. Listings may also appear in search results on other websites, such as Google.
  • Former friends (people you unfriended, or who unfriended you).
  • Friends of your friends.
  • Your friends, as a preview in Messenger, if someone shared the link before you turned Hide from friends on.
  • Your friends, as a preview in Stories, if you shared it to your story before turning Hide from friends on, until the story expires (up to 24 hours).

Groups, renewing and relisting

  • You can’t hide listings you create in groups, and you can’t list hidden listings in groups. Turning Hide from friends on for a listing in a group removes it from the group.
  • Renewing a listing keeps its Hide from friends setting.
  • Relisting (for example, after it sold) turns Hide from friends off automatically.
  • If you share a hidden listing’s link in a post or comment, your friends won’t see the listing, but they’ll still see the rest of the post or comment.

Meta says you can change the setting at any time.

Meta’s tips for selling on Marketplace

  • Drop-off and pickup help you avoid interacting with people directly.
  • Use a photo that clearly shows the item and its condition. If possible, include several original photos rather than one from a company website.
  • Add a detailed description of the item and its condition, including any stains or tears.
  • Make used clothing or shoes as clean as possible.
  • Personal hygiene items should be brand-new, in the original sealed packaging.
  • Agree on the price and the exact pickup location with the buyer.
  • Let the buyer look over the item before you accept payment.

Before you post, our listing checklist covers what helps a listing get approved and found.

How to know it worked

  • Your listing is published.
  • The price, photos and description are what you intended.

Still not working? Your next steps

  1. Listing rejected, pending or not showing? See Facebook Marketplace listing not showing.
  2. Marketplace missing or not available to you? See Facebook Marketplace not showing.
  3. Buyers seeing the wrong location? See Marketplace wrong location.
